Bonnabel Magnet Academy High held a special ceremony recently to dedicate an on campus garden to deceased student Jorion White.
“The graden is a means to keep Jorion in the memory of her classmates,” Bonnabel High principal Dawn Kalb said during a dedication ceremony that was attended by the school’s junior class, members of Jorion’s family, and Bonnabel staff and administration. “This garden will also serve as a place of solitude for students now and in the future. This place of serenity will allow students an area on campus where they can come to gain their composure, be in a calming environment, or reflect.”
Additions will be made to the garden in conjunction with other milestones of Jorion’s Class of 2017. The dedication ceremony took place in conjunction with the Class of 2017’s ring ceremony.
Plants were used in the garden that will attract butterflies. The ceremony included a butterfly release by Jorion’s family and friends. Bonnabel High staff members read remarks and three of Jorion’s friends (Nicole Celestine, Matthew Parker, and Trevena Bennett) read the poem Beautiful Friendship. Jorion’s family was also presented with her class sweater and shirt.
“We would like to thank everyone who helped make this day possible,” said Kalb. “The students donating money, Home Depot for donating the plants, Vibrant Wings Butterflies, Schiro’s Uniform Supply for their donation of Jorion’s framed sweater, and all of the volunteers that helped to make this beautiful garden. We appreciate everyone who attended this special event. Jorion will forever be in our hearts because once a Bruin, always a Bruin.”
