JP Schools Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley presents Pastor J. Nelson Brown with The 128 award for his work supporting students as a tutor and mentor.
The Jefferson Parish Public School System selected Pastor J. Nelson Brown as its latest honoree of a new recognition program that spotlights community partners. “The 128” recognizes key supporters of JPPSS. These individuals and groups are recognized for their efforts to positively support the system and impact children during the 128 hours a week kids are away from school.
“Pastor Brown certainly didn’t ask for the recognition, but we certainly want to honor him and his team for the work they are doing during the 128 hours of the week when we don’t have kids,” said JPPSS Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley. “We want to say thank you, we appreciate you, and keep working hard for our kids.”
Pastor Brown volunteers in schools across the district through numerous organizations. From tutoring students to serving as a mentor, this Marrero product gives back to his community in a number of areas. Through the Christian organization Students Standing Strong, Pastor Brown works with young people to help resolve differences and offer counsel at Lincoln Elementary, Ehret High, Helen Cox High, and Higgins High.
“I tell people everywhere I go that I owe this community,” said Pastor Brown. “I’m honored today. I’m humbled.”
JPPSS has students about 40 hours a week. JPPSS believes that for all kids to succeed, it needs strong community partners working with students for the other 128 hours. “The 128” was developed during Dr. Brumley’s 100-day entry plan. It complements the work already taking place to improve outcomes for all students and make JPPSS one of the most improved districts in the state.
