The U.S. Department of Education recognized John Clancy/Joseph Maggiore Elementary School for the Arts as a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School. One of only six schools in Louisiana to receive the honor this year, Clancy-Maggiore Elementary is being awarded along with Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools. The Blue Ribbon Schools program honors schools that are either high-performing or have closed achievement gaps. These schools demonstrate that all students can achieve at high levels.

“The leaders, educators, students, and families of these six schools should be incredibly proud of what they have accomplished,” said State Superintendent John White. “Their ability to either steadily improve student achievement over subsequent years or consistently remain one of the top performing schools in the state is a commendable achievement worthy of this distinguished honor.”

As one of two arts-integrated schools in the Jefferson Parish Public School System, students at Clancy-Maggiore Elementary receive music, visual art, and dance classes at every grade level. An understanding and appreciation for the fine arts is integrated into the school’s curriculum, creating a unique combination of artistic expression and instruction.

Clancy-Maggiore Elementary is the sixth school in JPPSS to be named a Blue Ribbon School since 2010. Past honorees in the district include Patrick F. Taylor Science & Technology Academy, a 2010 Blue Ribbon School, Metairie Academy for Advanced Studies, recognized in 2011, Gretna No. 2 Academy for Advanced Studies, which was recognized in 2012, and Dolhonde Elementary and Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies, both honored in 2013.

Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools are among the state’s highest-performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school’s subgroups and all students over the past five years.

These schools will be honored November 7-8 during an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., where each will receive an engraved plaque and flag signifying its status as a 2016 Blue Ribbon School.
